Top Gear Mazda Rx 7
Top Gear has been gracing our TV screens for years now, but many people don't realise just how old Top Gear really is. The Top Gear we know and love has been arounds since 2002 but the show, and Jeremy Clarkson, have been around a whole lot longer.
The first ever episode of Top Gear was aired on the 22nd April 1977 Jeremy's first appearance on the program came all the way back in in 1986. The show, back then, was focussed much more on consumer advice rather than the crazy challenges, insane road trips and mind boggling hypercars that we are used to seeing today. We decided to take a look back at a clip from 1993, and the difference is staggering.
This clip is long before the days of Richard Hammond and James May (9 years to be exact), and Jeremy co-presented to show alongside the likes of Tiff Needell, Jon Bentley and Ken Pollock.
The video begins in typical Top Gear fashion, images of cars and traffic while Jeremy commentates over the top.. in a rather posh and well spoken version of his normal voice might I add. It then cuts to Clarkson draped in lashings of denim sporting quite the hair do.
This particular segment pits a Mazda RX-7, a Mitsubishi 3000GTR VR4 and a Jaguar XJ against each other. It is really interesting hearing Jeremy talk, it is obvious that it's still Jeremy but he's somehow more professional and 'consumer focussed' and is lacking the unique energy he had when he took the reins of the show back in 2002 – however, you can still see elements of it.
While I literally just said that Jeremy is more professional, that doesn't mean that the show can't get away with being a lot less politically correct than they have to be now, with Jeremy saying phrases such as, 'this interior really was designed for absolute midgets'.
Jeremy goes onto review both the Mazda and Mitsubishi and them compares them to the Jaguar. It is a very interesting watch and you can check out the video below.
